I understand that folks need to have some information to make an
informed decision, but come on! Nothing in this life is really
guaranteed is it? Every time you get in your car, you may not ever
come back for many reasons. In fact, driving is one of the most
dangerous things you can do these days (especially you folks in
California!). But, do you have to analyze every possibility BEFORE
you will even get in the car and go? NO!!!! Most of us just jump in
and take off and don't give it a second thought.
Now all this may sound like a contradiction to someone who has
made a living investigating opportunities, but even I know that once
you have done all your due diligence, any company could fail. Who
would have ever thought that JC PENNY would get themselves in
trouble? That many, once strong financial institutions, would have
to be bailed out by the government? That mergers would become
necessary for many BIG firms just to stay alive? That the Rolling
Stones would have to tour into their 60's. Well, you get the picture!
While we do recommend that you do your homework, (or at least
read OI) we know that any GOOD company could fail right along
with the rotten ones. On the other hand, an unethical company may
thrive while an honest firm goes under.
It all comes down to a point where you have to say, this is what
want to do, it looks good, let's give it a shot. If we fail, at least we
had some fun. So, when it comes to the doubting Tom with a million
questions, I take the opportunity away from them. Here's how:
"Tom, you're right! I don't think this is the opportunity for you.
know several folks beside myself that are doing GREAT in this,
but I know it is not for everybody! Let me know when you find what
you are looking for would ya? There are plenty of good things to get
into out there, and I'm sure if you look hard enough, you will find
the business that is just right for you!"
That's it. I take it away! Now one of three things will happen:
1. Tom will go away and look for something else. In which case, you
just saved yourself a lot of time & heartache, cause he probably
won't do much anyway.
2. He will say, "now wait a minute Doug, I really want in this thing.
I just have a few questions!" At which I might say something to the
effect "Well Tom, you have more info now then when I made a
decision on this. I have already told you what you need to know.
I'll bet you did not think twice about getting in your car this morning
did you? Yet, that has a much higher chance of being a bad decision
than getting into this business! If you don't feel comfortable with this
- I WOULD NOT DO IT!"
3. Tom may go home and think about it. You were not begging him
to get in. In fact, you asked him not to! Now that is a change isn't it?
He may decide that he can turn people down as easily as you can,
and get in anyway. At which time I would be asking him "Now Tom,
is this really something you want to do? Because I won't mind it at all,
if you decide this is not for you. But, if you are going to do this, I want
you to commit to it! Don't come in and quit after I have spent a bunch
of time training you. I would rather you not get started!"
So next time you run into a doubting Tom with a million questions:
TAKE IT AWAY FROM HIM! Anyway it comes out,
you will be glad you did.
Lately it seems the trend in online promotion
has moved away from banner
advertising and migrated towards direct e-mail. The reason for this, in
my opinion, is the cost per visitor. A well written ad placed in a
targeted e-zine can usually bring more immediate hits to a site than a
well designed banner for the same cost.
Does that mean that direct e-mail is more effective.
I don't think so.
Marketing is not always about the quick sale, it's about carving a niche
for yourself, it's about branding your image. Don't get me wrong,
direct e-mail is very powerful and very effective but banner advertising
should not be discarded and thought of as too expensive without looking
at the benefits of branding your image.
It is a proven fact that it often takes people
6 or 7 times of looking
at your product before they decide to hand over the cash. The more they
see it, the more they become comfortable with it. That is the goal of
branding. Create a professional image that is easily recognizable and
get it in front of the masses. You do this by creating a good name and
a memorable logo for your business. Show me a multimillion dollar
company and I will show a company that understands that importance of
branding your image.
By incorporating your logo onto all of your
banners and getting them in
front of as many people as possible, you can advertise your product and
create brand awareness at the same time. Maybe your banner only gets
clicked on by 1% of the people that see it but how many more have seen
and will remember your logo or your company name. How many more will
remember that logo or that name and feel comfortable when they recognize
it on your web site.
Marketing is not always as cut and dry as people
say, its not always
about the quick sale. Its about building a good reputation and getting
repeat business. Banners can help you with this but getting your
company name out there.
